GEHES Codices Expand WG2 HVMP Inventory

Through a MP4V Virtual Mobility grant, historical German GEHES Codices were analysed to identify herbal veterinary medicinal products. The work, carried out by Christopher Eistert, added new historical entries to the WG2 HVMP inventory.

As part of a Virtual Mobility grant prioritised for Working Group 2, Christopher Eistert analysed historical pharmaceutical data from Germany to identify herbal veterinary medicinal products (HVMPs). The findings expanded the WG2 HVMP inventory with new entries, supporting further research within the field.

Between 1918 and 1969, a pharmaceutical register called the GEHES Codex was published in Germany. It served valuable reference for pharmacists, doctors and veterinarians, documenting a wide range of medicinal products used in human and animal health. These historical codices offer unique insights into the early development of veterinary medicinal products in Central Europe.

During the Virtual Mobility Grant, herbal veterinary medicinal products (HVMPs) listed in the GEHES Codices from 1914 to 1948 were analysed and systematically added to the WG2 inventory. Each entry includes information such as plant species, composition, preparation and targeted animals.

The new data enrich the existing database with several historical preparations, broadenings its diversity and supporting further research on ethnopharmacology, safety and sustainability of herbal veterinary medicinal products. The work carried out in the Virtual Mobility Grant period helps to strengthen the understanding of traditional plant use in animal health and supports further research within MedPlants4Vet.
