WG3 Meeting Drives Progress in Historical Textbooks Analysis in Ankara

From April 14–16 2026, the MedPlants4Vet WG3 "Historical Textbooks (HTB)" meeting took place in Ankara, Türkiye. Researchers from across Europe gathered to advance the analysis of historical veterinary plant use and develop common methodologies.

Hosted by Ankara University, the WG3 'Historical Textbooks (HTB)' subgroup meeting of the COST Action MedPlants4Vet (CA22109) was successfully held under the leadership of the working group.
Participants from Czechia, Spain, Georgia, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye contributed to a highly interdisciplinary exchange, bringing together expertise from veterinary medicine, pharmacy and linguistics.

The meeting focused on the systematic analysis of historical veterinary textbooks, aiming to build standardized datasets on medicinal plant use across Europe. Discussions addressed plant species, preparation methods, dosage and indications, as well as the development of harmonized methodologies for future ethnoveterinary and historical studies.

By integrating historical knowledge with modern scientific approaches, WG3 contributes to defining "traditional use" and supports the development of future regulatory frameworks for herbal veterinary medicinal products.

Beyond scientific progress, the meeting strengthened international collaboration and fostered a shared vision for advancing veterinary phytotherapy research across Europe.
