The meeting brought together the WG leaders and other experts from WG4 and WG5 to review progress on several key deliverables of the COST Action MedPlants4Vet and define the next steps.
Work on a systemic assessment report, which presents the current regulatory framework for the registration of herbal products in different categories, is nearing completion. The feed section still needs to be finalised, and a clear summary of the main findings will be added. This summary should support the simplified registration of herbal veterinary medicinal products (HVMPs) and clarify the essential data required for registration.
The development of veterinary herbal monographs was also discussed. The current approach is based on a review of all available data. Participants agreed to continue with this approach, and the finalisation of an example monograph on Matricaria is currently underway.
A major focus of the meeting was the development of a protocol that could serve as a future guideline for collecting clinical data in studies on herbal products for animals. The aim is to ensure that published studies provide complete and practically useful information. Minimum requirements should include the full botanical name of the plant, the plant part used, the animal species treated, dosage and treatment duration. Where available, additional information, such as analysis certificates, should also be provided. Participants noted that many publications currently lack essential details and therefore have limited practical value.
On 2 October, the meeting concluded with discussions on the Quality Management System and Risk Management deliverable. Given the specialised nature of this topic, industry representatives and subject-matter experts contributed to the discussion and helped develop a procedure for moving forward with herbal veterinary medicinal products and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
