MP4V YRIC grantee at GA Reims 2026 Congress

From 30 August to 2 September 2026, MP4V Young Researcher and Innovator Conference Grant (YRICG) recipient Dr. Taisa Bohdanovych participated in the 74th International Congress of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Products Research in Reims, France. She presented her findings on ethnoveterinary medicine in Ukraine, ranging from legal status to modern registered HVMPs and current research.

Research on the traditional use of herbal products in veterinary medicine is one of the aims of MedPlants4Vet. Ukraine is one of the countries-members of this project since 2024. Research on the Legal status of HVMPs, currently registered HVMPs, and some ethnoveterinary uses for Ukraine was presented at the Congress. It was shown that the laws on human and veterinary medicine in Ukraine are separate, and the main law regarding veterinary medicine in Ukraine is the Law of Ukraine on Veterinary Medicine. More than 70 plants were identified as ethnoveterinary remedies, among which the most frequently used were Achillea millefolium L., Calendula officinalis L., Hypericum perforatum L., and Matricaria chamomilla L. Some of these plants are the active ingredients of current herbal veterinary medicinal products of Ukraine, such as Otoderm, Fitosept, Aurikap, Urolic, and Phytokit.

Information on the bioactivity of some plants from the compiled list that are the focus of research in the Laboratory of Adaptational Biotechnology (participant's place of work) was also provided. In particular, Althaea officinalis and C. officinalis were characterised by high content of flavonoids (up to 2.29 ± 0.21 mg RE/g FW and 6.68 ± 0.28 mg RE/g FW, respectively) and high antioxidant activity (EC50 = 10.06 mg FW and EC50 = 6.91 ± 0.35 mg FW, respectively).

Overall, the findings demonstrate that Ukraine possesses a strong ethnoveterinary tradition, a supportive legal framework, and scientifically validated plant bioactivities.

Dr. Bohdanovych's participation was supported by the MP4V Young Researcher and Innovator Conference Grant (YRICG), which promotes the visibility of young scientists at high-level international events and strengthens European collaboration on herbal veterinary medicine.
